For the visually impaired, the task of traveling to a desired destination involves detecting and avoiding obstacles (using a long cane or guide dog), and navigating using way-points to the final landmark (using memory or a sighted person).  

People with Alzheimer’s are reliant on caretakers and family members for getting around.  Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease are often unaware of their limited way-finding abilities, resulting in them getting themselves into potentially dangerous situations where they can become lost.
